Elaine Turner is the go-to handbag designer for luxe living at an affordable price point. Fall ’08 has three distinct (and much needed offerings): The Voyager Collection, Color Me Happy Collection, and Street Chic Collection. “It’s all about luxury from day to night,” says Elaine Turner. Among the trends this season, points out Turner, is a “return to classic glamour” – - women want to look and feel luxurious. Think Birken-style high fashion.

With signature crown motif in tow, fall ’08 has some real snazzy pieces for an array of occasions. Attention to detail, creative linings and functional designs make fall ’08 a winner. Brilliant color offerings such as chestnut lizard or snow Leopard ensure something for any palette.

Elaine Turner counts Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn amongst her muses because, well, let’s face it, old Hollywood will never be mitigated because of its sense of classic style and easy sensuality. Reese Weatherspoon is one of Turner’s contemporary muses because of her sense of sophisticated and subtle glamour.

Here are some tips help you stay organized and function at optimum levels:

Make sure your handbag is clean, neat and organized.

A smaller handbag that can be worn across your chest, freeing up both your hands will make for an easier shopping trip as well.

What does your handbag look like? Messy, stained, filled with receipts, lists, candy wrappers, endless “to do” lists, old lipsticks, cosmetics, toiletries, heaps of memorabilia, money just thrown in?

Often our handbag become a sea of junk. A lot of us invest a good amount of money in our handbags. We love them, we carry them with pride – but what we carry, is often much more than we need. We often don’t give it a thought until it is overflowing with so much stuff that it creates shoulder and neck pain. A messy, heavy handbag is very inauspicious. It causes us stress when we constantly have to dig to find anything. It blocks wealth energy and bogs us down figuratively, physically and literally.

Be reasonable about what and how much you carry.

Make it a habit to clean it out once a week.

To attract wealth energy, also keep a clean, neat, and organized wallet. Coins, bills and cards in their correct space.

Keep lists in an easy access area. When you have completed that days “to do’s”, throw it out your list.

A clean purse is very auspicious and attracts wealth energy.

A red handbag carry’s energized, yang chi. By placing three chinese coins tied together with a red string inside will attract money. If you know a wealthy person, ask them for a bill of money to carry inside your purse. This will carry increased wealth energy inside your handbag .

Help all that money going out this season to find it’s way back in.

What ever handbag you fancy, keep it clean, neat, light and organized.

from Look Online

On Tuesday Texas-based handbag designer, Elaine Turner, held her Best little bags in Texas event at her new midtown showroom on Fifth Avenue. Attendees were invited to preview her Spring and Fall 08 collections while enjoying Tex-Mex food and margaritas. Turner is a former apparel designer and fashion merchandiser, who opened her leather goods business in 2000. Her bags are sold in boutiques throughout the country as well as department stores such as Bloomingdales and Nordstrom.

Turner is known for her use of exotic embossed leathers as well as pony hair and painted grass cloth. Each bag is finished with the Elaine Turner signature hardware. The handbags are priced in the moderately expensive range.

The clutch bags, which come in both large and small sizes, were particularly appealing, as were the leather satchels which come in a variety of colors. There is also an adorable line of diaper bags, so that new moms can be both chic and practical.

Elaine Turner in the News……
from Bag Trends

Market week is upon us once again. Now is when stores begin to preview and purchase resort and early spring merchandise. Michelle and I went to ENK’s Accessories Circuit – an accessory gal’s heaven. There’s much to say about upcoming trends and all will be shared in a follow-up post.

For now, here’s our pick for Best Dressed Designer at ENK – Elaine Turner. Elaine is Southern bell with a handbag line that oozes with sophistication. Wearing cropped black pants, a synching black belt and layering a puff-sleeved blouse and a grey vest, Elaine oozed with sophistication herself.

If you want to steal her chic look, head over to Saks and check out the fall offerings from Trina Turk. It’s a pretty good match, right?

To see more Elaine Turner bags, visit http://www.efashionhouse.com/productlist.html/elaine-turner/1017/5. We have a sneak peak at her upcoming collections. My personal favorite is the yellow, ostrich-embossed satchel. The handle has tortoise shell rings – a huge Spring trend.

The History of Handbags

Elaine Turner Handbags go down in History
Classic Style Women Love to Carry
By Seth Miller

If we were to trace the origin of handbags, women would likely be surprised to know that they were first utilized by a group of men some 2000 years ago. Although handbags were not in the scene at this time, men in biblical times did indeed carry the equivalent of what we consider to be the handbags of today.

This practice came to women’s knowledge and from then on, its handbags became completely indispensable. Handbags, purses, or any other kinds of totes will forever be a part of women’s wardrobes. Although some men continue to don handbags occasionally, women have dominated the scene in the handbag industry. No outfit can stand alone without a matching handbag. By far, handbags have encapsulated women’s fashion ever since the first modern versions appeared in France.

Nowadays, handbags were everywhere. Thousands of handbags of all imaginable styles and designs are on the market. Apparently, each kind has found its use in the wardrobe of every woman. And yet, with the overwhelming number of handbags that has emerged year after year and grabbed up by female consumers, there are still many, many more soon to invade women’s fashionable wardrobes. Moreover, handbags designers are proliferating. From a non-designer label to outrageously priced designer handbags, from a simple and plain masterpiece to shiny and elegantly embroidered handbags, the fashion industry will never cease to crank out new handbags for the market.

Who would have ever thought that men from biblical times may have been the ones to give rise to the industry of fashionable handbags?

Designer Purses – A Handbag Defines a Woman’s Outfit

from Factory Outlet Handbags
A handbag defines a woman’s outfit, and adds the finishing touches that all women enjoy having to contribute to an attractive and stylish appearance. Having the proper bag for most women is as important as having the proper pair of shoes, wearing the right dress, having appropriate earrings, or any other type of jewelry or accessory. In fact, accessorizing a person’s appearance through use of the right bag is something that most women learn at a very early age and it is a lesson that sticks with them for a lifetime of fashion consciousness.

A young woman for instance may decide that a shoulder style handbag is more appropriate for her looks and her lifestyle than some of the more formal bags that older women wear. Many times young women carry bags that are quilted or made of denim fabric. Others prefer a handbag made of leather or another material that is water resistant. The choices are many, and no one type of handbag is more right than any other as it comes down to personal preference.

Bags Change with Age
When a woman becomes more mature the type and style of handbag she carries is still quite important, but the style will probably change. A career minded woman will want to carry a bag that is practical and businesslike, and yet still feminine. Many times a woman will carry a leather bag made by a well known designer. Some will go for a retro looking handbag, others a replica handbag that resembles the designer bag. Still others will go for top quality in a bag preferring a name like Gucci over some of the handbags that are perceived to be less stylish.

Handbag Purse How Do You Match It?
A handbag purse is a wonderful accessory that complements any given outfit, and if chosen correctly, will even enhance its beauty. However, do you know how to match …..Whatever handbag a woman chooses to carry, the choice is an individual one. Picking the handbag that is right for her is a woman’s prerogative. Men, when choosing gifts for women should keep in mind the types of bags they have seen the woman carry in the past. When in doubt it is always wise for a man to ask another woman, perhaps the sales person in the store, for advice on choosing the right bag. A Skilled sales person can get an idea of a person’s lifestyle and help choose the proper bag. Whatever the choice made happens to be, a handbag is an individual accessory, but all women carry them.

Every woman knows that accessories are the key to accentuating an outfit, but beyond looking pretty it’s rare to find an accessory that actually does anything. A pair of sparkly earrings lends …..

Designer Elaine Turner – Accessory to high style

By CLIFFORD PUGH
from The Houston Chronicle

When Project Runway winner Chloe Dao said she believed she could carve out a successful fashion career in Houston instead of remaining in New York, her co-stars were incredulous.

But Elaine Turner empathizes completely. “Most (store owners) don’t care where I’m from,” she says. “They just want to sell handbags.”

Over the past six years Turner has developed a successful handbag line right here in the Bayou City. Her namesake collection, $195-$700, is featured nationally at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. She recently opened her first freestanding boutique in Dallas and plans to expand to other cities.

While building her business, the 35-year-old designer has given birth to two children, now ages 6 and 2. When she became pregnant just before she launched her company in 2000, her mother remarked, “I guess we’ll call it the year of creation for you.”

Juggling work and family has had its chaotic moments, but Turner wouldn’t have done things any differently. “I never could imagine not having my business or not having my own children,” she says. “I never thought it was some choice I had to make.”

She’s had a passion for fashion since she was a child. After graduating from the University of Texas in 1992, the Sugar Land native headed to Dallas, where she became head designer for a small apparel line. Four years later, she moved to New York to work for a private-label manufacturer whose clients included Ann Taylor and Talbots.

She met Jim Turner, her investment banker husband, there. After debating where to put down roots, the couple moved to Houston in 1999. She researched her options and decided to launch a handbag line because she believes it’s a product that makes women happy.

“It’s instant gratification. You don’t have to try it on. You don’t feel like you’re fat or worry, ‘Did my size go up?’ It’s an instant way to refresh yourself,” Turner says.

She noted a gap in the market between inexpensive handbags and high-priced designer labels, so she created a mid-priced collection of contemporary handbags “with a preppy edge” that’s now her trademark.

She has successfully attracted both the client who occasionally splurges on a $500 bag and the well-heeled customer who buys three or four Turner bags at a time, figuring that’s equal to the cost of one Prada bag.

Her first big seller was a straw handbag with a top handle called the “Jackie,” named for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Turner’s spring/summer line of painted straw and grass cloth handbags exude the attitude of a chic woman at a Palm Beach resort.

For fall, she’s featuring Italian leather bags trimmed in embossed exotics, like snakeskin or ostrich, and with chain wrap detail. A crown logo decorates each bag because she wants everyone to feel like royalty, Turner says.

Earlier this year, she introduced a line of stationary with the crown logo. A small leather goods collection of wallets, passport holders and key chains in ostrich, python and calf is coming in September.

At first, Turner and her husband, who is the company’s financial adviser, filled orders in the living room of their Houston home while their infant son sat in a bouncing chair. An order of eight bags from a small store in Arkansas was considered a large account.

“We laugh now, because those were such desperate days,” she says. “But that’s how every business forms. Even Starbucks started somewhere.”

Now she wholesales more than $1 million annually, has a staff of eight, and designs and ships out of a large loft space in the Rice Village. The handbags are manufactured near Hong Kong; her head of sales and public relations are based in New York. Turner flies to New York regularly to meet with major vendors.

“We’re not dumb. We know that we have to have that umbilical cord to New York,” Turner says. “But Neiman Marcus is not based in New York, and they’re the most successful luxury retailer in the world. The world has become so global and accessible. Communication has become so much more efficient through the Internet.”

She has been pleasantly surprised by the success of her boutique at the Plaza at Preston Center in Dallas. She chose Dallas over Houston because she didn’t want to compete against her sister, who features the line at Glo, a Rice Village accessories store.

“The markets are different, but both are really good,” Turner says. “Houston has a real international customer; you don’t get as much of that in Dallas. Houston women are so open-minded about labels and brands. They’ll never say, ‘I’ll only wear this.’ “

As the company continues to grow, Turner plans to expand to Atlanta, Palm Beach, San Antonio and other parts of Houston. She hopes one day to carve time out of her hectic schedule to mentor up-and-coming designers and encourage them to follow their dreams.

Her message: Be persistent. Be tenacious. But do it your way.

“It’s all about what you want out of life. You’re still going to be talented whether you’re in New York, Houston or wherever. Who’s to say a big fat salary in some big fashion company is going to make you happier than your own boutique?”

She also encourages aspiring designers to be serious — but not too serious — about their business. “At the end of the day, fashion is all about fun and fantasy. We’re not curing cancer. We’re just making pretty things and making women happy.”
